Inside Dragons
Shopping big from near the bottom.
The Dragons have spent 2026 near the foot of the table, in a season effectively conceded to the future. The joint venture dates to 1999 and carries one premiership, 2010, and one finals appearance in the past ten years; the Red V's grander history belongs to a predecessor whose records this club does not inherit. The response is the biggest recruitment drive in the competition: Scott Drinkwater at a figure the Telegraph put at $950K, Luke Metcalf at Fox Sports' reported $900K, with Keaon Koloamatangi, Kodi Nikorima, Phillip Sami and Connor Watson all arriving for 2027. Shane Flanagan is signed to 2028, though the Telegraph has reported a contract clause it calls a Dean Young failsafe, which is a comforting thing for a coach to read about himself. The Bruce Gordon Centre opened in May as the first building the whole club has ever shared. It now needs a team to move in.

Pathways
- A two-district ladder. The St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers districts enter the Harold Matthews, SG Ball, Tarsha Gale and Lisa Fiaola teams, each with its own presentation night; the NRL club's own teams start at Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup for men and at NRLW for women. The senior women's rung is split between the two districts in 2026 and becomes a single Dragons NSW Women's Premiership team from 2027.
- The junior representative teams in the Dragons' catchment are district teams: the St George Dragons launched their own 2026 Lisa Fiaola, Tarsha Gale, Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams under the St George District chairman, and the Illawarra Steelers field the same four grades and hold their own presentation night.
- The Dragons will enter a single NSW Women's Premiership team from 2027, replacing the St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers teams that have represented the catchment; the Steelers' team reached the finals every season since 2023 and won the 2024 premiership, and both districts keep their Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale teams.
